FM formed in 1984 with Steve Overland on vocals, Merv Goldsworthy on guitar, Andy Barnett on bass, and Pete Jupp on drums. Their debut album 'Indiscreet' came out in 1986 and included 'That Girl,' which became their breakthrough hit. The song helped push them into the mainstream with its melodic hard rock sound and Overland's vocals.
After 'That Girl,' FM released albums like 'Tough It Out' in 1989 and 'Takin' It All' in 1990, but they didn't get the same reception. The band also got tangled in a legal dispute with their label Polydor, which meant their fourth album 'Rock the Nation' had to come out on a different label. Goldsworthy and Barnett left in the early 1990s, leaving Overland as the only constant member through various lineup changes.
FM kept putting out records through the 1990s, including 'Love Lies Dying' in 1992 and 'Rocking the Free World' in 1995, but they never matched the commercial reach of those early years. They had a resurgence in the early 2000s.
