F.O.D. Band formed in New York City in 1983, with singer-songwriter David Freedman, guitarist Joe Merlino, and drummer Gary Chester. The name stood for "Friends of David." They put out their first album, "Under the Radar," the next year. Its lead single "Annie" got some radio play and landed in the Billboard top 10, a straightforward pop-rock song about lost love that people remembered.
They kept making records through the '80s and into the '90s, like "Good News" in 1985 and "Light & Shade" in 1991. Joe Merlino died in a motorcycle accident in 1990, which hit the band hard. David Freedman and Gary Chester stayed with the project, and other players came through, including bassist Tony Beard and trumpeter Chris Botti. Some critics called their sound derivative, but they kept writing the kind of melodic, lyric-driven songs they were known for, like "Last" and "Letter to Laura."
