Fogo formed in Rio de Janeiro in the early 2000s, a group of four childhood friends who grew up playing music together. Ricardo Chaves handled vocals, Alexandre Fontanetti played guitar, Yuri Gonzaga was on bass, and Dedê played drums. Their first album, simply called 'Fogo,' came out in 2003.
Their song 'Ao Cordeiro Puro' became something of an anthem, and they followed it with two more albums: 'Expedição Sonora' in 2007 and 'Morro do Dendê' in 2011. Other tracks like 'Django' and 'Te Entronizamos' show the range of their sound, which pulled from funk, samba, and hip-hop.
Their lyrics often dealt with social issues, which drew criticism from some political and media figures. They kept making music anyway, staying with the themes they wanted to explore.
