Fonky Family

Fonky Family came together in Marseille during the early 1990s, with Don Choa, Sat, Le Rat Luciano, and Menzo at the center. They started out in a local hip-hop scene that was just finding its feet, pulling from funk and soul records that drifted over from the States. Their first real break came with the 1997 album 'Si Dieu veut...', which put them on the map in French rap.

Songs like 'Si je les avais écoutés' and 'Art de rue' became staples for them, straightforward tracks that spoke to street life without much gloss. They kept putting out records through the late '90s and early 2000s, including 'Art de Rue' in 1999 and 'Marginale Musique' in 2003. The writing often leaned into social themes, which sometimes drew attention beyond the music itself.

By the mid-2000s, the group's output had slowed, and members began focusing more on solo projects. They never really announced a formal split, but the collective energy that defined those early albums gradually dispersed. For a certain generation of French rap listeners, though, those records still hold a place.
