Editor's note

Foo Fighters: Dave Grohl's loud, melodic rock band

The band formed after Nirvana and has kept straightforward rock alive for decades.

If you want to hear what they do best, put on 'Everlong' or 'My Hero', those songs haven't aged a day. They're the reason people still show up.

When Dave Grohl started Foo Fighters in 1995, he wasn't trying to reinvent anything, just make the kind of loud, melodic rock he loved. Songs like 'Monkey Wrench' from that first album showed exactly what they were about: big guitars, bigger hooks, and energy that felt both polished and raw. They've stayed that course through lineup changes and tragedy, becoming one of the few rock bands that still fills stadiums without chasing trends.

Grohl put the band together with Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith right after Nirvana ended, releasing their self-titled debut in 1995. Taylor Hawkins joined on drums in 1997 and became a fixture for over two decades, through albums like 'In Your Honor' and 'Wasting Light.' After Hawkins' death in 2022, they've continued with Rufus Taylor, still leaning on older material at shows.

Foo Fighters started in 1995 when Dave Grohl, who had been Nirvana's drummer, put together a band with Nate Mendel on bass and William Goldsmith on drums. Their first album came out that same year, with songs like 'Monkey Wrench' showing the kind of loud, melodic rock they'd become known for. Chris Shiflett joined on guitar not long after.

In 1997, Taylor Hawkins replaced Goldsmith on drums and became a central part of the band's sound for decades. They kept putting out records through the 2000s and 2010s, including 'In Your Honor' in 2005 and 'Wasting Light' in 2011. Their music stayed straightforward rock, built around Grohl's songs and the band's full-throttle playing.

Hawkins died in 2022 while the band was on tour. The Foo Fighters have continued with Rufus Taylor on drums, releasing 'Medicine at Midnight' in 2021 and playing shows that still lean on older material like 'Everlong' and 'My Hero.'
