Background notes

Archive material and source history

Foreign Tongues formed in Baltimore around 2010 with Matt Cohen on vocals and guitar, Ben Saidel on bass, and Justin Moyer on drums. Their early sound was raw and experimental, pulling from electronic, ambient, and rock elements without settling into one category. They built a following in the city's underground scene before the 2014 EP 'Envy' brought them wider attention. The title track 'Envy' and songs like 'Jealous Children' and 'There's A Hole In My Head' showed their knack for blending intimate, introspective lyrics with grander sonic textures.

After Saidel left in 2015, James Richmond replaced Moyer on drums. The band kept experimenting, leaning more into electronic influences on later releases like the 2018 album 'Greetings from the Internet.' Their work has always felt restless, shifting between distorted guitars, pulsing rhythms, and ethereal melodies without ever sounding like they're trying to fit a mold.

Songs like 'Maps Of The Sky' and 'You' capture that balance, familiar enough to pull you in, but odd enough to stick around.
