Forró Maria Bonita

Forró Maria Bonita is a Brazilian musical collective that takes its name from Maria Bonita, the companion of the legendary 20th-century bandit Lampião. Their work draws heavily on stories from the sertão, the arid backlands of Brazil's Northeast, with songs like 'Lampião' and 'Cangaceiro' directly referencing that folklore. The group formed around vocalist Maria Amélia, accordionist Marcos Campelo, bassist Peninha, and percussionist Jota Alves.

Their debut album, 'Lampião,' came out in 2004 and mixed traditional forró rhythms with rock and MPB. They followed it with records like 'Forró de Bode' in 2007 and 'Maria Bonita' in 2013. Their sound, which sometimes incorporated electronic or reggae touches, sparked debate among some traditionalists who felt it strayed too far from forró's roots.

Their performances often became charged discussions about the romanticized figure of Lampião and the region's history, set against the band's own rhythmic interpretations. Other songs in their catalog, such as 'Chamego de Menina' and 'Adeus Pra Solidão,' explore more personal themes within that same musical landscape.
