Forró Universitário came out of Fortaleza in the 1990s, updating the traditional northeastern Brazilian genre of forró. The original lineup included Anderson Freire on vocals, Daniel Souza on bass, Gilvan Filho on accordion, Zé Filho on percussion, and Dedé Brasil on zabumba. Later, Carlos André and Raulzinho do Acordeon joined the group.
Their 1999 song "Querendo Tchêre Tchê Tchê" became a hit with its energetic, playful feel. The band released several albums through the 2000s, including Dois Corações in 2001, Saudade de Fortaleza in 2003, and Ao Vivo em Fortaleza in 2005.
Their approach to forró drew some criticism from traditionalists at first, but they found a wide audience. Their music helped introduce the genre to new listeners and influenced other musicians who came after them.
