Tief ein Riß im Holz sich weitet,
Harz entströmt des Markes Grunde,
Fließt herab am hohen Stamme
Und der nahen Blitze Flamme
Leuchtet golden in der Wunde.
Unentwegt, der kahlen Krone
Zacken durch den Himmel schweifen,
Ihrem Traum gehorchend wanken.
Äste ächzend aufwärts ranken,
Zweige nach den Blitzen greifen,
Flehen, daß des Alters Wunde
Eines Blitzes Feuer heile,
Daß ihr Traum dem Sturme folge,
Losgelöst, als Aschewolke,
Frei, dem Strom der Zeit enteile.
