Fountains Of Wayne

Fountains of Wayne formed in New York City in the mid-1990s with Adam Schlesinger, Chris Collingwood, Brian Young, and Jody Porter. Their self-titled 1996 debut included the single "Radiation Vibe," which got some radio play and set the tone for their melodic, guitar-driven pop. They had a knack for writing about everyday situations with a wry sense of humor, a quality that showed up in songs like "Sink To The Bottom" and "Hey Julie."

The track's catchy bassline and cheeky lyrics made it an inescapable presence for a while, though it sometimes overshadowed the rest of their work. Later albums like "Traffic and Weather" (2007) and "Sky Full of Holes" (2011) leaned into more introspective writing and a cleaner, sometimes retro pop sound.

Adam Schlesinger died in 2020 from complications of COVID-19. He had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years earlier. The band's catalog, including songs like "Hackensack" and "Troubled Times," remains a sharp, tuneful snapshot of a certain kind of American guitar pop.
