Francisco Vieira Paiva was born in 1927 in the village of Canhas, Portugal. He grew up with traditional Portuguese music, including religious folk songs sometimes called fados, and started singing at local festivals when he was young.
In 1955, he joined the choir Coral de São Vicente de Lisboa, where he worked with conductor Jorge Croner de Vasconcelos. Paiva composed "Santo Antônio Por Nós Olhai (Hino de Santo Antonio)" in 1964 as a hymn to Saint Anthony. The song became widely known in Portugal and beyond, though some in the Catholic Church questioned whether it was appropriate for formal liturgy.
