Freak Style

Freak Style was a band that came together in the late 1990s. Their track 'Check Your Body' got some radio play and became their most recognizable song, though its lyrics drew criticism from some quarters for being too suggestive. The group included D.J. Kool on vocals, Mr. Frank handling production, and occasionally featured Zimbabwean mbira player Stella Chiweshe, which gave some of their work an African rhythmic touch.

They put out a few albums in that period, including 'Freak Style: The Album' in 1996 and 'Global Unity' two years later. Their sound mixed hip-hop with funk elements, and they developed a reputation for energetic live shows. The band's provocative image and lyrics meant they often found themselves at the center of minor controversies, but they kept recording through the early 2000s before fading from the mainstream.
