Archive material and source history

Freddie Aguilar was born in Ilocos Norte, Philippines in 1953. He grew up with Filipino folk traditions and learned guitar as a boy.

In the early 1970s, he began working with producer Teddy Diaz. Their 1978 album 'Anak' included the title track and 'Kumusta Ka,' which became his most recognized song. The album found a national audience in the Philippines.

'Kumusta Ka' is sung in Ilocano and deals with longing for a lost love. Other songs like 'Di humihiwalay' and 'Alaala' continued in this vein of straightforward Filipino balladry. His music reached listeners in other parts of Asia as well.
