Archive material and source history

Freddie and the Dreamers came out of Manchester in the early 1960s, with Freddie Garrity up front. They had a run of hits that included 'I Understand (Just How You Feel)', 'I'm Telling You Now', and 'You Were Made for Me'. Their sound was straightforward pop, built around Garrity's voice and the band's simple, catchy arrangements.

They toured the U.S. in 1965 and played places like Carnegie Hall and The Ed Sullivan Show. For a while, they were part of that wave of British acts that crossed over. The band's lineup settled with Garrity, Roy Crewdson on drums, Pete Birrell on bass, Derek Quinn on rhythm guitar, and Bernie Dwyer joining as lead guitarist.

Later in the 1960s they kept recording, and by the 1970s the group had gone through some changes. What's left is a handful of songs that still turn up on oldies radio, a reminder of how uncomplicated pop could sound back then.
