Freddy Quinn was born Franz-Eugen Helmuth Manfred Nidl in Austria in 1931. He started performing in clubs and theaters after the war, and in 1954 he had a hit in Germany with his version of the folk song "Heimweh nach St. Pauli."
His 1956 recording of "Oh My Darling Clementine" became one of his best-known songs. It was an American folk ballad that had been around for a long time, but Quinn's version gave it a new life in Europe. Other songs like "Heimatlos" and "Wir Lagen Vor Madagaskar" also became part of his repertoire.
Quinn recorded with a band called the Freddy Quinn Sextett, which included musicians like guitarist Manfred Uhlig and clarinetist Rolf Kühn. He kept performing and putting out records for many years after that.
