Fredl Fesl

Fredl Fesl was an Austrian band that started playing in the early 1980s, mixing folk and country sounds with a pop sensibility. Their song '3 Musketiere' became a hit in 1982, helping them find an audience across Austria. The group was led by Fredl Fesl himself on accordion and vocals, with Gerlinde Thuma on guitar and vocals, Walter Fröhlich on guitar, Helmut Röhrling on bass, and Reinhold Leitner on drums.

They put out albums like 'Lieder aus dem Wirtshaus' in 1984 and 'So schön ist Österreich' in 1986, songs that often felt like they belonged in a tavern or a local gathering. Tracks such as 'Der Schimmelwirt' and 'Der Cowboy' had that same straightforward, sing-along quality. Their music wasn't trying to be complicated, it was just tunes people could hum along to.

Over time, the band kept touring and recording, with albums like 'Herzschlag' in 1988 and 'Freunde fürs Leben' in 1990. They had songs like 'Anlass Jodler' and 'Der Königsjodler' that played with traditional yodeling in a lighthearted way. The lineup shifted here and there, but Fredl Fesl stayed at the center of it, playing accordion and singing in that familiar, unpretentious style.
