Background notes

Archive material and source history

Fredo Santana was born Derrick Coleman in 1990 and grew up in Chicago's Parkway Gardens housing project. He released his first mixtape, 'It's a Scary Site,' in 2012. His collaboration with Chief Keef on 'I Don't Like' brought him wider attention, and he became part of Chief Keef's Glory Boyz Entertainment while starting his own Savage Life Records.

His music often dealt with street life, with songs like 'Fuck You Up,' 'Bird Talk,' and 'Cook The Dope Up' reflecting that world. He released several mixtapes and albums, including 'Street Life' in 2013, 'Scary Site 2' in 2014, and 'Fredo Kruger' in 2017.

Fredo Santana died in January 2018 at age 27 from a seizure related to a liver condition. His raw style and the circumstances of his life and death left a particular mark on Chicago's hip-hop scene.
