Fredro Starr

Fredro Starr came up in Brooklyn's Brownsville neighborhood and started making music as a teenager. At 16, he formed the group Onyx with his friend Sonny Seeza. Their raw style found an audience in the early '90s, and their 1993 album 'Bacdafucup' included the track 'True Colors (Save The Last Dance)' that would become widely known.

That song appeared in the film 'Save the Last Dance,' which helped push it beyond hip-hop circles. Starr also acted in that movie, along with roles in 'Clockers' and 'The Wire.' Outside of Onyx, he worked on solo material and recorded with other artists, putting out tracks like 'California Girls' and 'All Out.'

His career with Onyx continued through several more albums, and the group's aggressive approach remained a constant. The music, including songs like 'America's Most' and 'Big Shots,' kept a direct, unfiltered tone that reflected their origins.
