Freeway came out of Philadelphia in the late 1990s, a rapper who got his start with a mixtape called 'Philadelphia Freeway' in 1999. That tape led to a deal with Roc-A-Fella Records, the label run by Jay-Z and Damon Dash. Around 2001, he teamed up with fellow Philly rapper Beanie Sigel as part of the group State Property.
His debut album 'Free at Last' arrived in 2002 and included the track 'Flipside,' which became one of his best-known songs. Other cuts like 'What We Do...' and 'Roc-A-Fella Billionaires' carried that same gritty, street-level feel. He kept putting out records after that, including 'Philadelphia Freeway 2' and 'Grindin' Don't Stop,' sticking close to the raw, narrative style he'd established early on.
