Furacão do Calypso

Furacão do Calypso formed in Belém, Brazil in 2003, led by vocalist Joelma da Silva Mendes. Their breakthrough came with the single 'A Lua Me Traiu,' which became an instant hit in Brazil and beyond. The band's sound mixed calypso, forró, and pop rhythms into something that felt both regional and widely accessible.

Early members included Joelma on vocals, Chimbinha on guitar and backing vocals, Zezinho Corrêa on bass, Gisele Alves on backing vocals, and Ximbinha on drums. Their music leaned on energetic beats and catchy melodies, with songs like 'Saudade' and 'Basta Um Olhar' capturing themes of love and longing.

In 2006, the band faced plagiarism accusations over 'A Lua Me Traiu,' though the claims were eventually dismissed. A more personal disruption came in 2015 when Joelma filed for divorce from Chimbinha, citing domestic violence. The split led to a temporary hiatus for the group.

They released albums including 'Ao Vivo em Belém' in 2004 and 'Tô Solteira de Novo' in 2005, maintaining a steady output even through lineup changes and personal turmoil.
