Background notes

Archive material and source history

Futureshock formed in London in 1977 with Dominic Masters on vocals and guitar, Paul Strange on bass, and Russell Velazquez on drums. They were part of that late-1970s moment when new wave, post-punk, and electronic music started to blur together. The band's 1979 single "On My Mind" became their breakthrough, a track with a pulsing rhythm and a kind of haunted melody that caught on.

Masters was the constant figure as the lineup shifted over the next few years. They put out albums like "Future Shock" in 1979 and "The Shape of Things to Come" in 1981. There was some noise about "On My Mind" sounding a bit like another song, but the band dismissed it as just drawing from the same pool of influences everyone was using at the time.

Futureshock called it quits around the mid-1980s. Masters kept writing and recording on his own afterward, while Strange and Velazquez started a band called Strange Fruit.
