Gabrielzinho do Irajá came up in the Irajá neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. He started as a percussionist and vocalist, drawing from the local samba and funk sounds. The singer Elza Soares was an early influence.
His 1998 album 'Reflexão' was a turning point. The title track became a hit, a ballad about love and loss that connected with listeners across Brazil. Other songs like 'Poetas de Mangueira' and 'Dica de Um Portelense' followed.
He released several more albums through the 2000s, including 'Vida Real' and 'Sem Fronteiras'. His band's lineup changed over time, but the music kept its grounding in those Rio rhythms.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
