Gaia na Gandaia formed in 1998 on the island of Boa Vista, with Maninho Furtado as their frontman. They started playing local events when recognition was hard to come by, as bigger islands dominated Cape Verde's music industry at the time. Their persistence eventually built them a following.
Their songs like 'Beijo de Língua' and 'Aprendizes' blend traditional Cape Verdean sounds with modern arrangements. They've released albums including Terra da Fé in 2001 and Vinte Anos in 2018. The band's lineup has changed over time, with Furtado remaining the constant member.
Some of their lyrics have addressed social and political matters, which has occasionally stirred discussion. Their music continues to resonate with listeners in Cape Verde and beyond.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
