Archive material and source history
Gail Ann Dorsey grew up in Philadelphia, where she listened to gospel, soul, and funk records as a child. She started performing professionally and eventually joined David Bowie's band for his 1994 'Outside' tour, singing and playing multiple instruments. That led to session work with artists like Lenny Kravitz and Bryan Ferry.
She released her first solo album, 'Rude Blue,' in 1999, followed by 'The Calling' in 2004 and 'I Say a Little Prayer' in 2009. A song from 'The Calling,' 'Amo Seu Cheiro,' became one of her better-known tracks. Her other songs include 'Take me to Your Love' and 'Always True.'
