Galwem was a Brazilian band that started in Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s, with Lia de Itamaracá as the lead vocalist. They put out albums like 'Ouça Minha Voz' in 1988, and their music drew on Brazilian rhythms mixed with jazz and soul. The band included musicians such as Paulo Moura on saxophone, Hermeto Pascoal on keyboard, Naná Vasconcelos on percussion, and Victor Biglione on drums.
Their song 'Ouça Minha Voz' became a hit in Brazil, and the album of the same name did well commercially. They played at festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Naná Vasconcelos died in 1996, which was a difficult time for the group. They kept making music after that, releasing albums through 2000 with titles like 'Bahia' and 'Brasil' that reflected different regions of the country.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
