Gama Junior formed in Salvador, Bahia in the early 1990s with Marcelo Nova on vocals and guitar, Zé Renato on bass, Tuzé de Abreu on guitar, and Marcão on drums. They released their self-titled debut album in 1995, which included the song 'Tempo de Umbú.' That track became a national hit in Brazil, mixing rock with baião rhythms.
After 'Tempo de Umbú' took off, the band put out several more albums through the late 1990s, including 'Músicas Para Ouvir Nu' in 1996 and 'Rock 'n' Roll' in 1998. Their lineup shifted over those years, with Zé Renato leaving in 1996 and Marcelo Nova departing in 2000 to work on solo material.
In 1997, Gama Junior faced accusations that 'Tempo de Umbú' was plagiarized from a traditional Bahian melody, though they maintained it was an adaptation. Nova rejoined the group in 2016, and they've continued performing and recording since then.
