Editor's note

Gangrena Gasosa, São Paulo's hardcore punk survivors

A Brazilian band whose raw sound gave voice to marginalized youth since the early 1980s.

For their sound, try "Boteco-teco" or "Pobre Fudido." That's where their São Paulo hardcore voice comes through clearest.

They formed in São Paulo in 1982 with a sound that mixed hardcore punk with Brazilian rhythms, and their lyrics spoke directly to the city's disaffected youth. Songs like "Pobre Fudido" became anthems of rebellion, and they faced real censorship and threats for it. Their influence shows up in later Brazilian acts like Sepultura and Ratos de Porão.

They started with Roberto Luque on vocals, João Gordo on bass, and Ricardo Campos on drums. Over four decades, they've released more than ten studio albums and kept touring Brazil and abroad. Luque and Gordo are still in the band today, alongside drummer Rafael T.

Gangrena Gasosa formed in São Paulo in 1982, with Roberto Luque on vocals, João Gordo on bass, and Ricardo Campos on drums. Their hardcore punk sound and lyrics about Brazil's marginalized youth didn't sit well with the city's more conservative elements, and they faced censorship and threats early on.

That track, along with songs like "Pobre Fudido" and "Boteco-teco," became anthems of rebellion for a generation of Brazilian listeners.

They've released over ten studio albums across four decades, touring Brazil and internationally. Their music, which sometimes incorporates Brazilian rhythms into hardcore, has been cited as an influence by other Brazilian acts like Sepultura and Ratos de Porão.

The band still performs, with Luque and Gordo remaining from the original lineup alongside drummer Rafael T. João Gordo has also built a separate career as a radio and television personality.
