In 1971, they released their debut single 'The Crown,' which reached the top of the UK charts. The song became their best-known work, with lyrics that touched on ambition and sacrifice. That same year, they put out an album also titled 'The Crown.'
The band released a couple more albums in the early 1970s, including 'Gary Bird and the GB Experience' in 1972 and 'You Ain't Got Me' in 1973. Their lineup changed over those years, with other musicians like Dave Rowberry, Liam Genockey, and Steve Goulding joining at different points. Bird remained the consistent frontman through these changes.
The band faced internal tensions and challenges with substance abuse, but they continued performing and recording through the early 1970s.
