The Massachusetts singer who fronted Extreme and briefly Van Halen, known for 'More Than Words' and a theatrical stage presence.
For the full picture, listen to 'More Than Words' and '5150' back-to-back. That shift tells you most of what you need to know about his voice.
Cherone's voice anchored Extreme's biggest hits, like the acoustic ballad 'More Than Words' and the rock anthem '5150.' His range shows up in solo tracks like 'Mine All Mine,' and he brought that theatrical energy to Van Halen for their 1998 album. He's one of those singers who can flip between hard rock and something quieter without losing the character in his delivery.
He started Extreme with Nuno Bettencourt in 1985, and their second album Pornograffitti broke through. After leaving in 1996, he did solo work, formed Tribe of Judah, and sang for Van Halen on Van Halen III. He rejoined Extreme briefly in 2009, but that didn't stick.
