Background notes

Archive material and source history

Gary Hughes came up in Chester, England, and started playing guitar as a teenager, influenced by bands like Deep Purple and UFO. He formed his first band, Tredegar, in the mid-1970s. In 1981, he helped start the band Ten with Tony O'Hora and Steve Mckenna. Their debut album included 'All I Want is You,' which became their best-known track.

After Ten broke up in 1987, Hughes put out solo records like his self-titled 1988 album and 'Turning the Tide' in 1994. He worked with Paul Di'Anno on a couple albums in the late 1990s and later teamed up with singer Joe Lynn Turner for two releases. Hughes got back together with some Ten members in 2004 for live shows, and the band recorded 'The Name of the Rose' in 2006.
