Gato Fedorento was a punk band from Fortaleza, Brazil, formed in 1980. The group included Jeferson Tex on vocals, Zezé do Caixão on guitar, and Marcos Peixe on drums. They played in underground clubs and squat parties, building a cult following with a raw sound that drew from UK and US punk movements.
Their debut album "Fedendo a Fome" came out in 1983 and included "Rap dos Matarruanos," a song that criticized government neglect of the poor. They followed with albums like "Carne e Osso" in 1986 and "Cara a Tapa" in 1990, maintaining their focus on social and political themes. Other tracks in their catalog include "Rústicos pelo Epicurismo" and "Uma Espécie de Coco."
The band faced censorship and police harassment for their outspoken lyrics and performances. They disbanded in 1992, though members pursued solo work and reunited for a 30th anniversary show in 2010. Their music helped establish Fortaleza as a center for punk and alternative scenes in Brazil.
