Gato Velho formed in São Paulo in 1980 with Edgard Scandurra on vocals, Fernando Penna on bass, Fábio Golfetti on guitar, and Ricardo Barreto on drums. Their self-titled debut came out in 1983, and its single 'Recreio Perdido' became an early signature track. The song's mood of lost childhood and unfulfilled dreams connected with listeners in Brazil.
Their 1984 album 'A Noite dos Vampiros' drew protests from conservative groups over its dark, erotic themes. The band didn't back down from that material. Scandurra's turn toward Buddhism around that time shifted his songwriting toward more introspective, spiritual territory, which divided some fans but also pulled in new ones. Other songs like 'Eddie' and 'Nashville É Apenas Mais Um Lugar Em Que Poderemos Ir' show the range they worked in.
They put out several more albums through the late '80s, including 'Quebra Cabeça' in 1985 and 'A Dança dos Doidos' in 1988. A compilation called '20 Anos' arrived in 2003. The group's sound mixed rock, pop, and blues without settling into one lane, held together by Scandurra's vocal presence and lyrical focus.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
