Archive material and source history

Gaúchos de Fato formed in 1983 with Luiz Marenco on accordion and vocals, Gustavo Farias on guitar, Glauco Saraiva on bass, and Cassiano Mendes on drums. They started playing in small town bars and rodeos around Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, working with traditional gaucho rhythms. Their debut album 'Alma Gaúcha' came out in 1988 and included 'Bagual e Meio,' a song about the region's horses that became popular at festivals.

The band's lineup changed over time. Glauco Saraiva left in 1998 and was replaced by Fernando Maran. Cassiano Mendes departed in 2007, with Marcelo Oliveira taking his place. They kept recording albums like 'De Fato' in 1991 and 'O Rio Grande É Nosso' in 2000. Other songs in their catalog include 'Bufo de Gaita,' 'Dançando de Patins,' and 'Rio Grande do Coração.'

Some listeners questioned their approach to gaucho music, particularly how they mixed traditional elements with contemporary arrangements. They received the Prêmio Açorianos de Música award in 1992 and a Disco de Ouro for 'De Fato.' The group continued to perform, with their music often heard at regional events and gatherings.
