Geek Sad formed in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in the late 1990s. The band started when guitarist Luiz Filho and bassist Roger Corrêa met at a local music festival and began playing together. Vocalist Joca Sartori joined them after hearing one of their early sessions.
In 2001, they released their debut album, which included the track "Arroz Com Canela." The song combined punk rock with elements of Brazilian Tropicália, and its lyrics addressed working-class themes. This approach gave them some attention in Brazil's rock scene.
Their music drew from punk influences alongside literary interests, though they kept a fairly straightforward sound. They continued playing for a while after that first album, but details about their later work are sparse.
