Gene Nacional formed in Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1980s around vocalist Kiko Zambianchi, with guitarist Jorge Salomão, bassist Marcelo Rainho, and drummer Gaspar Paes Leme. Their debut album 'Presente' came out in 1986, and they followed it with 'Ilhas' in 1995 after some lineup changes and financial struggles in the early 1990s.
Their song 'Perto de Mim' from 'Ilhas' became a national hit in Brazil, though its lyrics drew some criticism for being too sensual. Zambianchi was known for being outspoken about social issues through the band's music.
Gene Nacional released eight studio albums over their career, including tracks like 'Reggae Manso' alongside their better-known ballads. They blended rock with pop and funk elements, staying active through various phases of Brazilian music.
