Gene Summers was born Gene Summers Jr. in 1939 and came up in Dallas, Texas. In the late 1950s, he formed a band called the Rebels and started playing local shows. He signed with Liberty Records in 1958 and put out his debut single 'School of Rock 'n' Roll,' which got some attention. A couple more singles followed, like 'Gotta Lotta That' and 'Straight Skirts.'

In 1960, he released 'Alabama Shake,' which became his most notorious track. The song's lyrics and the dance it referenced caused enough of a stir that some radio stations wouldn't play it. Other songs from around that time include 'Almost Persuaded' and 'Big Blue Diamonds.'

Summers kept recording and playing off and on through the 1960s, though he dealt with some personal issues that made things uneven.
