Gene Wilder was born Jerome Silberman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1933. He studied at the University of Iowa before making his Broadway debut in 1963. His acting career took off with roles in films like 'The Producers' in 1967, 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory' in 1971, and 'Blazing Saddles' and 'Young Frankenstein' in 1974.
While primarily known as an actor, Wilder recorded several songs around the time of 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.' His version of 'Pure Imagination' from that film became particularly well-known. He also recorded 'Closer And Closer And Closer' and other songs in 1971.
Wilder didn't maintain a permanent musical group for these recordings. His singing voice had a particular quality that worked for certain roles, especially when paired with his on-screen presence in the Wonka film.
