Background notes

Archive material and source history

Geordie formed in Newcastle in the early 1970s, with Brian Johnson on vocals, Vic Malcolm on guitar, Derek Longmuir on drums, and Tom Hill on bass. Their debut album 'Hope You Like It' came out in 1973 and included 'All Because Of You,' which got some attention for Johnson's rough-edged singing. They put out three more albums over the next few years, but never quite broke through to a wider audience.

In 1975, they released 'Ain't It Just Like a Woman,' which became their best-known track. It developed a following anyway, and remains the thing most people remember about the band.

Johnson left Geordie in the late 1970s. A few years later, he joined AC/DC as their new singer, which obviously changed his career trajectory completely. The original band's four albums, including songs like 'House Of The Rising Sun' and 'Can You Do It?,' still turn up in rock collections from that era.
