Gerald Levert was born in Philadelphia in 1966, the son of Eddie Levert from The O'Jays. He started making music with his brother Sean and Marc Gordon in 1985, forming the trio LeVert. Their first album 'I Get Hot' had the hit 'Casanova,' and they put out several more records through the late '80s and early '90s.
He went solo in the mid-1990s with 'Private Line,' which included a duet with Phyllis Hyman. The 1995 album 'The Body of Soul' had 'Deep As It Goes,' a ballad that became one of his best-known songs. Other tracks like 'Since You Ain't Around' and 'Baby Hold On To Me' showed his style of straightforward R&B singing.
Levert kept recording through the 2000s, but his career was interrupted by personal troubles, including a 2005 arrest. He died in 2006 at age 40.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
