Geraldo Viola e Paranaense

Geraldo Viola e Paranaense was a Brazilian folk duo formed in the 1950s. Geraldo Viola played guitar and sang, coming from Goiás, while Paranaense handled accordion from Paraná. They wrote songs that connected with rural communities across Brazil, with their 1964 album 'Barro Vermelho' giving its name to one of their most notable tracks.

Their music sometimes addressed social issues affecting poor and marginalized people. 'Barro Vermelho' became particularly associated with landless peasants, drawing both support and criticism. Beyond that song, they recorded others like 'Distância' and 'Telepatia' that showed their range within Brazilian folk styles.

They released several albums including their self-titled debut in 1959, 'Barro Vermelho' in 1964, and 'Naquela Noite' in 1968. Their straightforward guitar and accordion arrangements helped shape what would later be called sertanejo music, though they worked before that term became widely used for a commercial genre.
