Ghost Mice formed in Los Angeles in the late 2000s around vocalist and songwriter David Wax, who had some classical training. They started as a folk-rock trio with drummer Shannon Wiseman and bassist Dan Lyons, playing small venues and local festivals. In 2009, Wiseman died in a car accident, and the band brought in percussionist Jefferson Hamer to continue.

Their third album, "Sing Out," came out in 2013 and got them wider attention, with the title track getting radio play. They released several other albums, including "Circles" in 2015 and "For the Birds" in 2019. Songs like "Witches & Warlocks" and "Austin To El Paso" show their folk-rock style with banjo and acoustic guitar.

At some point, Ghost Mice had a legal dispute with a record label over royalties, which they resolved. The band kept playing with Wax, Lyons, and Hamer handling vocals and instruments.
