Gilbert Gisler was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1959. By the late 1970s he had formed a band that would become Gilbert Gisler and Os Coplas, with members including Paulo da Costa on bass, Ricardo Peregrino on drums, and Pedro de Paula on keyboards and accordion.
In 1982 he released his debut album, which featured 'Coplas Para Um Fogo Grande.' The song's haunting melody and introspective lyrics found an audience in Brazil. He followed it with albums like 'A Terra Prometida' in 1984 and 'O Último Vácuo' in 1988.
In 1992 he was arrested for drug possession. He continued to record through the 1990s and 2000s, releasing 'Flores da Escuridão' in 2001, and died in 2015.
