Gilberto Dias was born in São Luís, Brazil, into a musical family. He grew up around samba, maracatu, and baião, and learned to play guitar and pandeiro. In the late 1970s, he formed the Gilberto Dias Band, which included musicians like Luiz Carlos on bass, Fernando Cesar on drums, Zé Roberto on saxophone, and Gilberto "Limão" on tamborim.
In 1981, the band released their debut album, "Gilberto Dias." The song "São Raimundo" from that album became a hit, drawing inspiration from northeastern pilgrimages to the saint's shrine. Its melody and lyrics resonated widely, helping define the group's sound.
The band released several albums over the following years, including "Samba de Verão" in 1983, "Axé Bahia" in 1985, "Paraíso" in 1988, and a compilation, "O Melhor de Gilberto Dias," in 1992. They faced challenges in Brazil's political climate during the 1980s, with Dias's outspoken views sometimes leading to censorship.
