Gilberto Esquivel came up in Guadalajara, Jalisco, where he grew up hearing traditional Mexican folk songs and boleros. He started working on his voice early, studying with teachers and getting familiar with the music around him.
In the 1960s he joined Los Tres Caballeros, and his voice and stage presence got him noticed. He put out his first album in 1963, which included 'A Tu Amor Quede Rendido.' That song took off and put him in front of a lot of Mexican listeners.
His singing had a clear, direct quality, and he worked with Mexican rhythms, boleros, and some jazz. The lyrics tended to be about love and heartbreak. Later on there were some accusations of plagiarism and talk about his personal life, which complicated things.
