Editor's note

Gilberto Santa Rosa, salsa's gentleman for forty years

A steady voice in salsa since 1980, known for hits like "No Pense Enamorarme Otra Vez."

For a good sense of his style, try "No Pense Enamorarme Otra Vez" or "Quien Lo Diria." They're both classic Santa Rosa.

He's been singing salsa for more than forty years, and people call him "El Caballero de la Salsa." That title fits because his work, from early albums like "Gilberto" to later tracks such as "Yo No Te Pido," carries a certain grace. He's kept a steady group of musicians around him, including pianist Ramón Sánchez, which gives his sound a consistent warmth.

He put out his first album, simply titled "Gilberto," back in 1980. His 1994 album "Conteo Regresivo" had a big hit with the title track, and he's kept releasing music, like a live album from Bellas Artes in 2018.
