Archive material and source history
Gilson Mello was born in Salvador, Bahia in 1968. He grew up hearing samba, bossa nova, and soul music at home, and later mentioned Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Gilberto Gil as influences.
In the late 1980s, he joined Bell Marques and Wado to form Os Chicletes com Banana. The band had some chart success in Brazil with songs like "Voce Não Entende Nada" and "100% Você." Mello went solo in the early 2000s, and his debut album included "Majestoso," a ballad that became well-known. Another song from around that time was "Santificação."
There was an arrest for marijuana possession in 2005, though the charge was later dismissed. Some critics questioned whether his approach to soul music felt borrowed.
