Giorgio Moroder was born in Ortisei, Italy in 1940. He started playing guitar and writing songs as a teenager, then moved to Germany in the 1960s where he played in various bands. His own track 'Son Of My Father' came out in 1972 and became an international hit, with its driving bassline and hypnotic melody making it a disco staple.
In 1971 he met Donna Summer, and their work together helped define the sound of disco. Their 1977 collaboration 'I Feel Love' was particularly influential for its use of synthesizers and electronic instruments. As musical tastes shifted in the late 1970s, Moroder began exploring other electronic styles like techno and house.
He's continued working across decades, with later tracks like 'Déjà Vu' featuring Sia and 'Tom's Diner' with Britney Spears showing his ongoing presence in pop music. The accusations of plagiarism that followed some of his work never really slowed him down.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
