Giorno formed in New York City in the late 1970s around David Thomas and Alan Vega. Their 1981 album 'Pink Flag' brought them wider attention with a mix of experimental rock, punk, and electronic elements that developed a cult following. The song 'Clear the Area' became one of their more recognizable tracks from this period.

Internal tensions led to Vega leaving the band in 1984. Thomas continued with new members, and they kept recording through the 1980s and early 1990s with albums like 'The Eraser' and 'Blood From a Stone.'
