Giuseppe Verdi was born in Busseto, Italy in 1813. His first opera, 'Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio,' appeared in 1839, but it was 'Nabucco' in 1842 that brought him real attention, partly for its choral music and themes that resonated with Italian audiences of the time.
He wrote 'Rigoletto' in 1851, which includes the famous tenor aria 'La Donna è Mobile.' 'La Traviata' followed in 1853 and faced some censorship for its subject matter. Later works like 'Aida' in 1871 and 'Otello' in 1887 are often noted for their orchestration and dramatic scope. His final opera was 'Falstaff' in 1893.
Verdi married Margherita Barezzi in 1836. She and their two children died young. He later lived with the singer Giuseppina Strepponi. His music, including pieces like 'Celeste Aida' from 'Aida' and 'Stride La Vampa' from 'Il Trovatore,' remains central to the opera repertoire.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
