Archive material and source history
Gloria Jones was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1945. She started performing in local clubs as a teenager, and in 1964, producer Ed Cobb signed her to Sue Records. That same year, he produced her debut single 'Tainted Love,' which reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her version of 'Tainted Love' became a staple of the psychedelic era, though it was later overshadowed by Soft Cell's 1981 cover. Jones recorded other songs like 'Go Now' and 'Heartbeat,' but none matched the success of that first single.
She worked with a backing band called The Toys, and released several albums through the late 1960s including 'Come Go with Me' and 'My Bad Boy.' Jones died in 2010.
